5 Signs Your AC Needs Repair, Not Just Cleaning
April 10, 2026
Many AC problems are misdiagnosed as needing cleaning when the real issue is more serious. Learn the 5 warning signs before your system fails completely.
Many AC problems are misdiagnosed as needing cleaning when the underlying issue is more serious. Cleaning can mask a failing system temporarily, but the problem returns quickly and can worsen. Here is what to watch for.
Sign 1: Warm Air Even at Full Power
If your AC is set to 18°C but the room won't cool below 27°C, cleaning won't fix it. This typically means a refrigerant leak, a compressor that is starting to fail, or an expansion valve blockage. A refrigerant top-up without finding the leak is just delaying an inevitable repair.
Sign 2: Ice Forming on the Coils or Outdoor Unit
Counterintuitively, ice on an AC is a sign it is not working correctly. Causes include very low refrigerant, severely restricted airflow, or outdoor temperature below 18°C combined with low refrigerant.
Sign 3: Water Dripping Indoors
Some condensation on the drain line is normal, but if water is actively dripping from the indoor unit, the drain pan or drain line is blocked or damaged. Left untreated, this causes ceiling and wall damage and mold growth.
Sign 4: Grinding, Clicking, or Hissing Sounds
Grinding indicates motor bearings failing. Clicking on startup suggests a relay or capacitor issue. Hissing usually means a refrigerant leak. Rattling is often just a loose panel or debris in the outdoor unit.
Sign 5: Electricity Bills Up 20% or More
If nothing else in your home changed but your electricity bill jumped, your AC is likely running inefficiently. An inefficient AC has to work harder and longer to achieve the same cooling — costing more and wearing out faster. Catching these issues early means lower repair costs and longer equipment life.
